NOW I LAY ME

We rode in Argentia, Newfoundland today, and as you can see from the photographs, everything was perfect.

The area is wondrous for its brilliant vistas and diverse riding terrain. The weather was ideal and the company solid. There was nothing more to ask for and while we usually make time to give thanks and praise on such occasions (as our father always says “There’s no atheists on the battlefield”), today I found myself in a more child like state of prayer.

“… an American Naval base…”

After all, Argentia was an American Naval base built on Newfoundland’s most eastern peninsula during the Second World War. Here ships refueled, convoys gathered and a watch began to defend North America – her rights and her freedom.

A freedom to ride. To laugh with our friends. To challenge ourselves. A freedom to live life to its fullest. A freedom that we owe to the many men and women who once made this base their home. Who fought, who bled and sacrificed for us.

Today we prayed for their souls.
